World-renowned prostate cancer specialists hosted a workshop in the latest technology for urologists from around Australia and New Zealand.

The Robotic Prostatectomy Workshop, hosted by The Wesley Hospital, offered specialists the opportunity to hear about technological advances and points of technique.

Wesley Hospital Medical Advisory Committee and Urology Department Chair, Associate Professor Troy Gianduzzo welcomed the chance to hear from international experts like  Professor Christopher Eden from the United Kingdom and Professor Koon Rha from South Korea.

“Our involvement in this event is a strong reflection of the quality of surgeons in our robotics program and a great opportunity to showcase the Wesley and its medical advancements to leading specialists around the globe.

“Procedures used to treat urological cancers have been evolving over the years, including the use of the minimally invasive, robotic surgery,” he said.

However, he cautioned that despite the advances in care, men still needed to be proactive about their health.

“It’s critical that men get regular health checks and visit their doctor. Seeing their GP and talking about prostate cancer and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing is a really important step,” he said.

The Wesley is a leading provider of prostate and cancer detection and treatment, offering patients access to urologists, radiologists, medical oncologists and radiation oncologists on one campus.

Earlier in the year, the Wesley Hospital was named Australia’s first Centre of Excellence in robotic surgery by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) and the first in Queensland for metabolic and bariatric surgery. Since 2010, the Wesley Hospital has performed more than 4,000 robotic cases.

General Manager of the hospital, Michael Krieg, said the workshop was a clear demonstration of the Wesley’s leadership in innovative medical technology, with strong links to global thought leaders.
